The header image (photographed in 2011), and the drawing below (Annie McCrie, 1895) are of Broughton Mains, a farm near Whithorn, in Wigtownshire, south-west Scotland.
Broughton Mains figures strongly in the McCrie family history, being the birthplace of the last remaining members of the family in Scotland. Of 12 children born there to James and Jane (nee Matthews) McCrie, only two – James (jnr) and Niven – are known to have had children of their own, and then only in their respective adopted countries, South Africa and Australia.
